If that offence was committed a long time ago he could plead 'folly of youth' i.e. something that was done out of youthful high spirits. If he has been 'clean' since then he shouldn't really have a problem. I think, if everyone who had done something stupid in their youth was banned from immigrating to NZ, the country would be half empty
