Employers have to take tax at the high rate regardless of the employers return as if you don't end up getting an IRD number in time, then they can get in to serious trouble!! Watch out for that Kiwisaver Scheme - it all sounds well and good, but once you're in it you're stuck with it for so many years before you can opt out or get your money back. It's great that they want to help people save for retirement, but the system is a financial trap as it stands.
