How old are your kids? W ehave done it with 2 kids but they aren't school age just yet- the eldest will be due to start in august providing we have visas through by then.

Do you have an area in mind or just go where the work is?Some people do go back home cos things don't work out as planned but if you are open minded and adaptable then all should be OK. And i think IT is a pretty 'safe' carreer as it is in demand here- like you said- even if you take a job that isn't exactly what you wnat to get your foot in the door so to speak- you can search for other jobs once you got vias sorted etc.
