Lease for most
Throughout NZ about 40% of homes are rental properties, rather than owner-occupied. Therefore, long-term rental homes are very common. Most agencies, in my limited experience, ask for leases of 6 or 12 months.
You can find many rental homes listed on TradeMe, or through any of the real estate sites, such are Harcourts.
TradeMe is probably the best place to look, though, as most agents list properties on both their website and TradeMe.
