I am a travel agent so would recommend the following:
Check luggage allowances as you usually get alot more going to NZ via the US. Call the airline as they may offer double luggage allowance if you can prove you are emigrating (ie. have a visa in your passport), but you will not be able to stopover for a few days.
Prices change all the time depending on seat availability.
