How old are your kids?
Presuming you are from the UK you get 6 months on a visit visa which would more than likely cover your wife and kids until PR comes through. It would depend though if your kids were to go to school as visit visa wouldn't allow that.
You could apply for a temporary work visa for yourself so you will be able to work until your PR comes through. You may be able to get student vias for the kids if they are going to go to school however don't know much about that as my kids aren't school age yet and we should have PR through before the eldest one is.
