I arrived in New Zealand on a 12-month working-holiday-visa on a 1 way ticket with no onward flights. I think the argument is that if you have a visa that allows you to stay 12 months or longer then you don't need an onward flight because you can't buy tickets for that far in advance... I think I just had to prove that I had the funds to buy a ticket out of the country when my year is up... although they didn't end up asking me for proof I had it just in case... not sure if that helps but I certainly didn't fit into the categories in 1happywoman's thread and didn't need onward flights...
