Being british you are allowed to go to NZ for 6 months (holiday visa). To be able to start work you/OH would need a working visa or residency. You need a job offer to get a work visa/permit. Our plan is for OH to get job offer apply for a temporary work visa while we submit our EOI and wait for residency. Quite a few people do it this way if they can't make up the points for EOI with qualifictaions but a job offer would give them enough points.

Have you checked to points calculator to see where you stand on EOI? If you OH has a degree or equivelent the you should have the points for EOI.

There are pro's and cons to getting residency before you go.Not having a visa means you have to have a return ticket which would be pretty expensive for 6 of you but as i have said it is easier to find a job if you are in NZ (especially with IT).
