You're right New Zealand is not paradise - but so far I have not yet met someone who claimed it would be...
New Zealand is not appealing because of the cities, rather despite of. If you're looking for posh, hip, stylish cities you're in the wrong place...
Taupo is not known for it's shops, you know. Maybe you should have put on some hiking boots and walked around a bit. But you are right for people with an "what can you offer me" consumer attitude, NZ might not be the right place to live.
Coming from Switzerland, with four spoken languages I think it is quite important to learn each others culture and language. Maoris are part of NZ and I find it absolutely ok that kids learn basics of their culture and language. They can still learn French or German (or Chinese).
I would have tons of good ideas to spend a great weekend in NZ but I doubt you would like it (nothing to consume there)...
