You should check out the post about power tools in nz, in this section. It's all about power tools and step down transformers, but it's a similar theme.

Good brand transformers are reliable enough, but I think the most important things to think about are:

1. Are the items worth shipping (age, cost etc) and
2. If it breaks, will I be able to get it fixed (and therefore, return to point 1!)?

US items will most likely be difficult to source parts for, unless you get them shipped over.
