Question Step-down Transformers--Advice?

I've done some poking around and it seems that some of the electronic gear we thought we'd have to abandon (stand mixer, vacuum sealer, stereo system) we can actually take with us if we purchase a step-down transformer to turn NZ electricity into US electricity.

There's a lengthy post about it here, and the transformers can be bought from this company.

I'm not too concerned about whether it will actually work or not, but rather about the *safety* of these devices. Does anyone have any experience with them?
