Welcome Johnbosco. I do believe all of LOTR was filmed in NZ. Unfortunately I never met an ent in the wild, though. If you are interested in learning about Maori culture, and can find the DVDs, try Whale Rider (uplifting) and Once Were Warriors (depressing). But both are good for insight into the Maori situation. Am not sure what is available for learning about modern pakeha (non-Maori) culture, but The Piano is a historical film set in colonial times.
NZ is a lovely place, and the people are generally open and friendly. Beware though, if you are of African blood, you may run into prejudice, especially out in the rural areas. Sadly many folks resent non-whites moving into "their" country.
