Default Going for a rekkie in January.

Have to say my preference would be Auckland over Christchurch. If you are living in a big city now then at least for transition purposes - Auckland would get you back into the smaller environment of NZ. Once you've settled - then a move to somewhere else would be ideal.

You have British Pounds to exchange? So cost of living would be comparable . Christchurch is cheaper - but it is insular, with people wearing their collar up and hanging out with their school mates. There are two types of people - passengers and pilots and Christchurch is said to be full of passengers. It was voted one of the most un-innovative cities in NZ. Auckland and Dunedin were voted the most innovative - so maybe look at Dunedin if you to move to the South Island - Dunedin has a great university too.

Cheers,
