Default Mapping software / GPS

David,
I can't suggest software for your PC, but have you tried the various online maps, aerial views, satellite views etc ?

For example:

For the Canterbury region (with colour aerial photos).

FourmiLab - Images from space of everywhere on Earth - Just select your position.
For a brilliant view of NZ from space enter:
Lat: 40 south, Long: 170 east, Alt: 9000km
Click on "No night"
If you want a big image select "Image size" 1024 pixels
Click on "update" when you've entered everything.

Check out my NZ links page, section Pictures & Maps, if you like these and want to see more !

All the best

Steve
