Can anyone help??

I want to go to NZ with the wife and kids for a couple of years to work, and maybe settle.
I have read that, to qualify for a work visa, i first need a written offer of employment. is this correct?
Sound difficult to acheive to me as i am still in UK.
Is the work visa the right one to go for in my situation?
