Police certificates are valid for six months, not three (at least according to NZIS1011 from August 2003). As for how long they take to arrive, in the UK I think it depends on your local force. Mine took about six weeks. The Germans win again though - my certificate from there took less than a week to arrive. Was also free in Germany - ten quid in the UK.

Medicals should be faster - but make sure your X-rays are sent with the certificate. I have no idea whether embassy staff are qualified to assess them (if so, why does the doctor also have to see them?) - but they do ask for them. The doctor who did my medical didn't include the X-ray plates with the certificate, and I had to get them sent on afterwards.
