| Area Information: |
| 160 kilometers north of Whangarei is the second largest commercial centre in Northland, Kaitaia, a popular tourist destination. Buses leave daily for Cape Reinga via the famous Ninety Mile Beach. Cape Reinga is the most northern point of New Zealand and also where the two oceans, the Tasman and Pacific meet dramatically. Ninety Mile Beach which runs down the West Coast is a vast beautiful beach with great surfing, fishing and enormous sand dunes. Both the East and the West coast of the tip of New Zealand can be seen from Reservoir Hill. A culturally active community with much history to see, the Far North Regional Museum houses hundreds of photographs of Kaitaia and its surroundings in the early 1900’s, collections of a giant moa skeleton and ship wreck treasures. Twenty minutes away is Sullivans Nocturnal Park with its main attraction, the glow worm grotto. Beside is a waterfall, a nocturnal kiwi room, picnic areas and nature walks. |
